Well that was quite a ride...

4/10/2013  Full Functionality Restored.

During 4Q2013, we started to see residual issues from Blacklisting, Hacking, 2 separate Viruses (neither compromised our users), loss of website email functionality (@mokofc.org emal was not affected), incorrect page loading due to bungled Search Engine Optimization implementation, and loss of tech support availabiilty from our current provider.  It was overwhelming, and I didn't even try to keep this blog current.  We tried to accomodate or mitigate the issues, probably for too long, so when a notice of shutdown by the current provider was received, we bit the bullet & switched to another Christian/Catholic provider, who completed operations about a week ago.  Extensive testing shows we are back up to full functionality, please let This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. know if you see otherwise.

On the good note, we received the go-ahead from the State Deputy to form a Web Committee, with real Tech Support and real Training to be provided.  We have one or two spots left to fill on the Committee, please let me know if you would be interested.  Things are really looking up, and we can begin to implement long-awaited features, like individual log-in, protected content, user searching, etc.

On the down side of things, the original provider was the institution behind the "Council Websities" initiative, so that wonderful idea is gone along with them.  There are many ways to effectively communicate with your constituents, and Website presence represents a part of the whole picture.  I'm trying a few things out on my local Councils, and I've advise quite a few of the larger Councils on their questions.   Stay tuned for further developments.

It's a big bad world out there...

9/13/2012  Web Site Attacked

Late PM Friday, 9/8, I started noticing website oddities: the layout was scrambled using IE, and some pages attempted re-direction.  I alerted our tech partner.  On Saturday AM we confirmed a "hidden iFrame" infection, and I took the site off-line to protect our users.  Google also detected the infection and blacklisted the site, placing warning messages on search pages.  Browsers setup to use 'safe-browsing' client software also displayed warning messages.

We cleaned the site and moved it back on-line Wed PM.  We re-submitted the site to Google Labs on Thursday AM, and it returned to full service Thursday PM.  Changes are in-process to prevent future occurrences.

Note - The infection redirected users to a 3rd-party (non KofC) site that attempted to spread malware:  NO KofC user data was hacked into, no personal information was harvested.

It's a big bad Internet out there...  update your anti-virus and operating system frequently, and be sure before you click.

On behalf of the Web committee, I apologige for any inconvenience caused by the outage.

(Ironically, our site registrar GoDaddy was also hacked during this time period, and millions of web sites and email (including MoKofC) were off-line, so we would have been unreachable even if we had not been infected...)

Temporary Email Outage

Written by Jeff Slama. Posted in Webmaster Blog

The GoDaddy email forwarding system suffered an outage yesterday 8/6 from 3am until 11pm.  All emails of the form "This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. " were affected, please re-send any from that period.
Note if you use the website "Leadership" menu to select a contact for sending email, that worked just fine and you do not need to re-send anything.

Web Server Update

Written by Jeff Slama. Posted in Webmaster Blog

4/3/2012  -  Well that was quite a ride...   Shortly after deploying the new web server, communications issues developed, resulting in gradual degradation and finally complete blockage of all Contact emails and on-line form submissions.  Incredibly, our site was marked as a spam source by several of the major BlackListing companies.  ALL attempts to resolve the issue proved futile.  In desperation we moved the site back to the original domain, and the situation stabilized.  During the move back, the site was off-line for several hours.

Users - please note all emails sent from the site (Contact Us, Leadership Profiles, etc.) from 3/1 to 4/2 may not have reached their destination.  You might want to follow-up on critical communications.
State Chairmen - please note some on-line forms from the same period may not have reached you directly.  I manually created summary forms to cover the submissions during that period.  Luckily, I had setup the site to save all submissions locally, so no data were lost.
